π Humanitarian Eye Care Mission β Ghana 2025
Our upcoming humanitarian eye-care mission in Ghana will begin on October 27, 2025, with the first phase taking place in Hohoe and the surrounding communities, where we will deliver over 100 eyeglasses that were previously prescribed during our last outreach.
From October 31 to November 4, the team will move to the Adzato Electoral Area, covering villages such as Adzato, Akplorfudzi, Klomikpota, Kpordui, Sodzi, Aflorto, Vorvornukorpe, Hadota, Sokutsime, Amenyokorpe and Tregui/Agortoe.
This second phase will include comprehensive eye examinations, fundus photography, AI-assisted retinal screening, and the distribution of prescription glasses to hundreds of people who have no access to regular eye care.
ποΈ Our Mission
This outreach focuses on preventing blindness and improving the quality of life for hundreds of people.
We combine Dutch medical expertise, AI-assisted diagnostics, and local collaboration to create sustainable eye care both in Hohoe and across the Adzato Electoral Area, including the communities of Adzato, Akplorfudzi, Klomikpota, Kpordui, Sodzi, Aflorto, Vorvornukorpe, Hadota, Sokutsime, and Amenyokorpe.
π¬ What We Do
β’ Comprehensive eye examinations (vision tests, refraction, fundus photography, AI analysis)
β’ Distribution of new customized prescription glasses and optical aids
β’ Referral of patients with severe retinal or eye conditions to local hospitals
β’ Training of local health staff to ensure long-term continuity of care
β’ Targeting over 300 people to receive free professional eye screening, diagnosis, and treatment
β’ Plans underway for eye surgeries and long-term treatment programs to support patients with advanced eye diseases and ensure sustainable follow-up care
π€ Local & International Collaboration
The project is organized by Stichting Licht voor het Oog (Light for the Eye Foundation), under the leadership and founders namely Mr. Johannes Schoonhoven and his son Jonathan Schoonhoven and Mr. Amir Katzin based in the Netherlands, coordinated internationally by Mr. John Kinn Hoedoafia, Coordinator based in the Netherlands.
Locally, the mission is coordinated by Dr. Gameli Hoedoafia, Dr. Cephas Hoedoafia Snr., Hon. Abraham Apertogbor, Torgbui Agbeve III, Dr. Eric Kwao and Mr. Eugene Zormelo, in close cooperation with the Volta Regional Health Directorate and local health institutions.
β‘οΈ Due to the successful implementation of the first program in Hohoe, it has attracted Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Cephas Snr., who are now ready to add their expertise to make the upcoming project even more successful.
π Equipment & Facilities
Our team will be equipped with advanced instruments such as AI-assisted fundus cameras, portable autorefractors, trial lens sets, and more than 100 prescription glasses ready to be fitted and distributed on-site.
